Geographical Indications
Geographical Indications (GIs) are signs used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities, reputation or characteristics that are essentially attributable to that place of origin. GIs add value to consumers by educating them about the origin, quality, and authenticity of a product. They also help producers protect their products from imitation or misuse by others who may try to benefit from the reputation and goodwill associated with the product's geographic origin.
In India, GI law is governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. Unlike other forms of intellectual property rights, GIs are collectively owned, and the statute provides a certification regime that brings all legitimate producers of the GI who hail from the same geographical region within its fold.
